About our speaker:

Dorothy BrowningAfter a successful career in corporate healthcare which required extensive travel, Dorothy transitioned to the non-profit sector to achieve a life balance that allowed her to integrate into her local community in Kansas City.  She has spent the last 10 years in the micro-enterprise field.  Working with a private non-profit, the First Step Fund, she initially worked directly with clients help them to develop plans for their business and managing the classroom process.

The curriculum used was developed by the Kauffman Foundation and Dorothy began working closely with the Foundation to promote the national use of the curriculum, training other organizations across the US in the delivery of the program and in setting up their own micro-enterprise organizations.  She trained the local Goodwill program when they started their Microenterprise Institute in 2010.

After the Foundation decided to spin off the program, she became the Program Manager for the Women’s Business Center in Kansas City, an SBA program with a mission to promote women led businesses.

She transitioned to Florida at the end of 2012 to lend support to her mother, and joined the team at Goodwill.  This allowed them to double the size of their program. In 2013, Goodwill expanded to Collier County, delivering three training sessions in the Naples area.

To date Goodwill has graduated almost 200 individuals from their program with over 70 businesses started.  When the first five classes were surveyed, 91% of the businesses were still in existence over two years after start up. Last summer they initiated a micro-enterprise program which allows individuals who are graduates of the program to secure a character based loan of between two and five thousand dollars to assist in the start-up and expansion of their business.
